Update on the number of handhelds and app sales in the fall of 2009

iPhones and Apps by the Numbers

Posted by Blaine Bertsch — October 16th, 2009

Having sold 37 million iPhones and iPod Touch handhelds by the end of April 2009, Apple will have total sales of over 50 million units by the fall of 2009.
54% of iPhone and iPod Touch users are in the USA. New carriers are expected to carry the phone this fall in several markets opening the door to millions of possible new users.

As of today, there are over 90,000 apps in the store with nearly 200 more released every day. It takes an average of 10 days to gain approval and enter the store after submission to Apple for approval.

The iTunes store had 1 Billion downloads in the first nine months and reached 2 billion downloads within the following five.

"The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone...The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it." - Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO

Highlights from the latest Apple event

Apple Highlights

Posted by Blaine Bertsch — September 9th, 2009

Steve Jobs appeared at the September 9 Apple event with some product updates and news. Here are a few of the highlights.

  • 75,000 applications in the iTunes store
  • 1.8 billion app downloads
  • iPhone 3.1 update released
  • iTunes 9 announced with some great new features
  • the iPod makes up 74% of the mobile music device market
  • 225 million iPods have been sold
  • over 20 million units of the iPod Touch sold
  • over 30 million iPhones sold
  • Apple is on the cusp of leading the mobile gaming device market

The only thing that disappoints me is the lack of a camera in the iPod Touch. It softens our interest in developing software that uses the camera until a camera is on both the iPod and the iPhone.
